FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is one of the best options for the Inca Trail walk and for the adventurers who want to experience the changes in climate from mountain to jungle, as well as for those who are able to handle the high altitude and long distances. Ascending the Salkantay Pass of 4650 MASL (approx. 15,088 FASL) is not too tiring, but you will need to be well acclimated beforehand.
HOW MANY DAYS DO I NEED TO ACCLIMATE MYSELF IN CUSCO BEFORE THE TREK?
It is very important that you are well acclimated to the altitude before starting the Salkantay Trek. We recommend that you spend at least 2 to 3 days in the city of Cusco to help acclimate yourself and to avoid possible problems associated with altitude sickness during your trip.
If you have already been to another destination with a high altitude before arriving to Cusco, we still recommend that you spend a full day in Cusco to rest, recuperate from your trip, and to enjoy the beautiful views of the city before departing for your trek.
This meeting will take place on the night before the departure for your trek, and during this meeting we will inform the group about the trip from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm in our office. Our office is located on Calle Procuradores, number 351, and inside number 120. We are located one block from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco.
WHAT ABOUT THE BALANCE?
The other half of the balance for the tour is due in cash in our office (US dollars or Peruvian Soles) here in Cusco. We have many ATM’s located in the historical center of Cusco (around the Plaza de Armas) to take out money.
DUFFLE BAG FOR THE CLASSIC 5-DAY SALKANTAY TREK
The night before your trek begins, you will be given a small duffle bag to pack your clothes in for the next four days. Your weight limit for the bag is 7 kg/15.4 pounds. Our horsemen will carry your canvas bag for you along with the food and the camping equipment. It’s important to keep in mind that you will not have access to your articles of clothing in this bag until the end of each day, since the horsemen and the horses will always be ahead of the group. During the trip, you will also need a daypack that is big enough to carry your personal items, such as a warm coat, rain jacket, camera, sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, water, etc. In general, a 30 to 50 liter backpack is sufficient.
